St. Leonard Church in Lipnica Murowana

By tradition, the church under the vocation of St. Leonard was erected in 1141 in place of a pagan mast church. Svetovid statue which supported St. Leonard altar is said to be its remains. The present – day church, built in the same place, comes from 15 century and is a valuable monument of wooden architecture. It belongs to the oldest and best - preserved Gothic wooden temples. The temple is even of a greater significance, taking into account the fact that it has survived to present times almost unchanged. The church equipment gathered in the interior includes a Baroque pulpit from 1711, a triptych (a three- part wooden altar) from 1500 presenting St. Leonard as an abbot surrounded by St. George and St. Laurence, side triptychs showing Jesus Baby’s adoration and St. Nicolas. In the middle of the church floor there is a stone slab under which there is a vault of Josephine and Anthony Ledóchowski, the parents of Blessed Maria Teresa and Ursula. Neither can polychrome on the walls from 1711 with religious and moralistic motives be left unnoticed .The historic St. Leonard Church was enrolled on the list of the world’s cultural inheritance UNESCO as a pearl of medieval wooden architecture.
